My Life, My Story project enables older people to create Life Story books. This project offers immediate therapeutic benefits, as well as being a fantastic investment in future care needs and creating a legacy for generations to come.
The Volunteer will provide short-term support (8 weeks minimum); 2-3 flexible hours per week (split between 1-1 interviews with client and editing work at home);
Volunteer will have Life Story Training and ongoing support
We will register each volunteer for a DBS at no cost to the volunteer
You will be invited to a virtual induction and training
Volunteer will be reporting to Volunteer Service Leader
The location is Surrey – home visiting with 1:1 meetings with older people (after induction, training and mentoring)
The volunteer will enable an older person to capture their memories and milestones in a book of stories and pictures.
The process will involve using templates to conduct interviews, write, edit and design a Life Story book.
Volunteers will receive initial training sessions which cover: Life Story research ; How to get the most from interviews; Templates; Use of online Software/Tech and creative tips; A practical session and feedback
Skills required:
-Genuine interest in other people and their stories
-Confidence to work independently
-Ability to listen and engage empathetically
-Good communication skills and friendly disposition
-Be fluent in English
-Have empathy for older people
-Be reliable and committed
-Have patience, being aware some older people have mild dementia / forgetfulness / hearing impairment
-Ability to encourage and motivate people
-To respect confidentiality
-To act in a non-discriminatory and non- judgmental way
-Excellent English and literacy skills
-Full training will be provided and ongoing support
