Yalda?
Shabe-e-Yalda (Yalda Night), one of the most ancient Persian festivals, is celebrated annually on 21st December by Iranians, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Afghans, Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Turkmens all around the world. It is also known as the winter solstice celebration as it is the last night of autumn and the longest night of the year. The word 'Yalda' literally means birth and refers to the birth of Mitra; the mythological Goddess of light.

The amazing part about Yalda night, unsurprisingly, is the delicious food! Pomegranate, Watermelon and nuts are the exclusives of this special event. The 'red' fruits have symbolic significance; whilst some believe watermelon symbolises the sun because of its spherical shape, others believe the watermelon keeps one safe and healthy from being hurt by winter diseases! Pomegranate also symbolises birth with its bright red seeds symbolising the glow of life. To end the night, members of the society come together every year to celebrate this special night. Not only is it filled with lots of food but also with tonnes of fun, laughter and great dance. It truly is one of the most memorable nights of the year!
