ABOUT US:

British Canoeing is the National Governing Body (NGB) for Canoe, Kayak and paddle sport in the UK. We support paddling from the elite Olympic Level, through to all recreational users who want to enjoy the UK's Blue Spaces. We are currently working in partnership with the Environment Agency, National Trust and the Angling Trust to remove harmful Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) from our rivers. This is so our waterways can be enjoyed by everyone including paddlers, anglers, boaters

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our partnership to remove Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) from our waterway is extremely important. "Over 2,000 plants and animals have been introduced to Britain from all over the world by people. These are known as non-native species. Most are harmless, but around 10-15% spread and become invasive non-native species which harm wildlife and the environment, are costly to the economy and can even impact on our health and way of life." (GB Non Native Species Secretariat).

British Canoeing, the Angling Trust and the Environment Agency are committed to removing Floating Pennywort from the River Thames and its tributaries. Floating Pennywort is a harmful invasive species because:
- It can cause a flood risk by physically blocking the waterway
- It prevents light and oxygen reaching native plants and animals and results in biodiversity loss
- It causes a drowning risk to livestock and other animals
- By physically blocking the river channel, it prevents use by recreational users such as paddlers, anglers, boaters, swimmers.

Volunteers are vital to manage and rid this harmful Invasive Non Native Species.
