Volunteer Engineer Role

REMAP is a UK wide charity with skilled volunteers who design and make or adapt equipment free of charge for disabled people. Volunteer engineers are the essence of our local branch activities.

What You'll Do:
  • You will be a good communicator and listener, who can take instructions and understand the needs of disabled clients and healthcare professionals. You must have the ability to turn that knowledge into solutions which make life easier for the disabled.
  • You will therefore be able to design and make pieces of equipment for individuals with specific needs.
  • Using your practical skills, you will work with one or more of the following materials and technology: metal, wood, plastic, 3D CAD software, and electronics.
Why You'll Love It:

Volunteering for REMAP means you can:

  • Make a significant difference to somebody’s life in your local area.
  • Enjoy the opportunity to meet other, like-minded people who choose to be a part of such a rewarding cause.
  • Receive recognition for the skills and experience you bring to your branch, and the people we’re helping
What You'll Learn:

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, including induction into all the areas outlined. You will at any time be able to discuss your role and any additional needs with us

What We're Looking For:
  • You will need to have your own tools and workshop or access to these.
  • You will be expected to attend bi-monthly local branch meetings.
  • You will have to undergo DBS clearance and be 18+
  • This is a voluntary role but out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
  • To listen well, so that you understand someone’s needs.
  • The ability to design and construct devices that help the disabled.
  • Set up and install the equipment you have designed and built wherever the patient is living.
  • Able to drive your own vehicle or have good transport links.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team.
  • Willing to develop skills and experience.
  • Practical design skills that may have been obtained though DIY activities or in skilled employment.
  • Able to follow Remap policies and procedures.
  • Able to understand and apply our risk management system.
  • Able to apply disability, equality, and inclusion practices.
  • Able to keep people’s personal details safely.
